#CoronavirusSA: Emfuleni coughs up overtime during lockdown─── 12:12 Sat, 31 Oct 2020
The cash-strapped Emfuleni Local Municipality is said to have paid R29 million in overtime to employees during the four months of the national coronavirus (Covid-19) lockdown.
This is according to Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Lebogang Maile, in a written reply to Democratic Alliance Emfuleni North constituency head, Kingsol Chabalala in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.
The municipality is also said to have spent over R378 million on employees' overtime for the past five years.
Chabalala elaborated that it is worrying that Emfuleni, which is facing a serious cash flow problem, continues to pay what he deemed “ridiculous amounts of money” to employees.
He emphasised the money could have been used for service delivery, including paying debts owed to Eskom and Rand Water.
