A Northern Cape man is expected to appear before the Christiana Magistrate's Court on Wednesday to face a charge linked to the illegal dealing in diamonds.
The 25-year-old was arrested in the North West in possession of uncut diamonds on Tuesday. The Hawks spokesperson in the Northern Cape, Nomthandazo Mnisi, says the suspect was arrested following a sting operation that was conducted by the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation team.
She says they followed up on information that surfaced regarding suspects selling unpolished diamonds in the province. The suspect was then arrested after a potential buyer bought an object amounting to R46 000 in Christiana in the North West.
The arrest of the 25-year-old man in the North West came on the same day the Provincial Police Commissioner, Sello Kwena, launched the provincial Safer Festive Season operations.
As the country nears the festive season, Kwena has highlighted that there will be high police visibility with many officers deployed to crime hotspot areas. He said the will be zero tolerance for any criminal activity in the province.
Meanwhile, Mnisi confirms investigations continue.
