Call to action over corrupt police | News Article

National Police Commissioner, Khehla Sitole, is being urged to clean up the mess within the South African Police Service (SAPS)

Parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) is calling for proper procedures to be followed to ensure corrupt police officials are held accountable. This, after Sitole confirmed 546 police members were linked to corruption cases under investigation. The call for police to be brought to book also comes amidst corruption allegations against six officials who were arrested at Lengau Traffic and Testing centre in Bloemfontein on Wednesday.

OFM News has reported that six officials, including a police officer, due to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Thursday are accused of fraud and corruption relating to taking bribes in exchange of roadworthy certificates for deregistered vehicles amongst other violations.

Free State Spokeperson for the Hawks Lynda Steyn told the OFM News' team on the ground during the arrests it form part of a countrywide operation which started in 2019 in which 15 people were arrested overall in the Free State, Eastern Cape, Limpopo, and Gauteng.

She confirmed the accused include admin clerks, a police officer and driving school administrators across the four provinces.

Meanwhile, Scopa's Chairperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa says it is appalling that the National Deputy Commissioner responsible for Human Resources, Bonang Mgwenya, is in court facing criminal charges herself and calls on Sitole to act swiftly.

Mgwenya is accused of tender fraud relating to an almost R200 million tender for police emergency warning equipment.
