#VeldFires: Calls mount for joint forces─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 07:00 Thu, 05 Nov 2020
Farmers in the Free State are still reeling from the veld fires that have ravaged the Hertzogville, Dealesville, Bultfontein, and Hoopstad areas last month, burning down at least 100 000 hectares of Free State farmland.
This is according to Shoprite Group CSI Manager, Lunga Schoeman. The group, in collaboration with a disaster response organisation, the Gift of the Givers Foundation, calls on members of the public to make donations towards relief funds to support affected farmers in the Free State.
OFM News previously reported on how farming communities in the province have severely been affected by the veld fires and how they left them in a dire situation.
Following the October runaway fires, Agriculture MEC William Bulwane announced before Members of the Provincial Legislature that farmers whose land, properties, and livestock were destroyed are in much need of government's assistance.
Bulwane highlighted that the fires left many farmers in a desperate situation, which also threatens food security in the province.
He said one farmer was badly injured and taken to ICU. It was also reported that another farmer in Hertzogville lost approximately R900 000 in livestock and incurred about R3 million in damages to property on his farm.
