NW man left critical following electrocution | News Article

A 48-year-old man is receiving medical treatment at the Potchefstroom Provincial Hospital after being electrocuted on a municipal community farm located outside the North West city.

ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring, says the farm in question is located on the R54 between Potchefstroom and Vereeniging.

According to Meiring, when paramedics arrived at the farm just before 10 am on Saturday, they discovered that several cattle had also been electrocuted. A high voltage cable running over the farm had collapsed – presumably causing the electrocution. Meiring says the 48-year-old man was in a critical condition and had sustained burn wounds. Paramedics provided “life support interventions” before transporting him to the hospital.

The local SPCA was called in to provide the animals with treatment. Local police and electricians were on the scene to assess what had transpired.

Just under two years ago, three people died after being electrocuted at a tavern in a Bloemfontein residential area. According to reports on social media, it is alleged the deceased touched a steel gate on the property and were electrocuted. Provincial Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson, Sipho Towa, confirmed the incident. It is believed that two of the victims were declared dead on the scene, whilst the third succumbed to his/her injuries at a later stage.
