Emfuleni experiencing water problems─── 17:20 Mon, 09 Nov 2020
Some residents from the Emfuleni Local Municipality have been forced to travel to the neighbouring Democratic Alliance-led Midvaal Local Municipality in Gauteng to fetch water.
For a second week now, various areas in the Vaal Triangle have been experiencing water shortages. Meanwhile, from Tuesday onwards, Rand Water will be reducing water supply pressure by 20 percent.
The reduction follows after the Emfuleni Local Municipality failed to pay Rand Water arrears of R994 million. The total outstanding amount due is R1.1 billion.
Last month OFM News reported that the High Court local division in Johannesburg attached the municipal bank account, in favour of a Chinese company. This is affecting service delivery.
In a video that was posted on Facebook on Monday, it appears some disgruntled Emfuleni residents staged a protest outside the house of Emfuleni Mayor, Gift Moerane. Police swiftly arrived to disperse the angry crowd.
The angry residents are calling for the resignation of the mayor. Last week mayoral spokesperson Lebo Mofokeng said the mayor has been receiving death threats.
