NW MEC gives hope to previous matrics─── LEATILE LEIEE 12:25 Tue, 10 Nov 2020
The MEC of Education in the North West, Mmaphefo Matsemela, is on a drive to get previous matric learners in informal settlements to return to education.
Matsemela on Monday visited Schaumburg Informal Settlements and during her stay, she quickly became aware of the number of learners who had done well in Secondary School but were doing farm work in the community.
Learners who had passed their matric with a Bachelor, Diploma and Higher Certificate pass were given a leap of faith when Matsemela announced that the Department will have an arrangement with the Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme to evaluate their results and give them an opportunity to enter a tertiary institution.
‘’I have been extremely touched by what I have seen in this area. Learners who have done well in their secondary education are doing nothing," said Matsemela.
The MEC met a 23-year-old woman Patricia Mashabane, who completed her matric as long ago as 2017, but says due to the lack of finances she was not able to get a tertiary education.
The Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme is set to assist learners who are interested to take the path of Education studies.
MEC Matsemela concluded that this unit will assist the profession which currently has many teachers going on pension. The unit will help attract young people to the profession.
