The Bloemfontein police officer who reportedly shot a 24-year-old alleged robber in Heidedal had apparently fired at the suspects ten times as they were trying to flee.

This is according to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson, Ndileka Cola. One of the suspects, who sustained a gunshot wound to his leg, reportedly begged for mercy and pleaded with the officer to not shoot, after the officer allegedly fatally shot the 24-year-old who was trying to drive away from the scene.

OFM News previously reported that the officer in question allegedly shot the deceased in the chest and wounded another, whilst a third suspect managed to escape after the alleged attempted housebreaking. Cola confirms that the IPID is now investigating a case of an alleged murder against the police officer stationed at the organised crime unit.

"It is alleged that on Tuesday 10 November 2020 at about 02:00 am the suspect who is a police officer was sleeping at his premises in Heidedal when he heard a noise inside his house. It is alleged that he went downstairs to check what was happening and he found two males in his house holding his Plasma TV, he allegedly asked them about what they were doing in his house," Cola adds.

She alludes that following this, the police officer went for his pistol in his bedroom and followed the suspects who were in his house.

"The two males allegedly ran away and put the TV next to the gate. It is alleged that the said intruders went into the vehicle that was parked outside the yard. While they were in the vehicle the surviving victim told his friend who was sitting in the driver’s seat to drive away," she further explains.
