Cele to release crime stats─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 08:35 Thu, 12 Nov 2020
The level of crime in South Africa will on Friday be in the spotlight, as Police Minister, Bheki Cele, is expected to brief the media on crime statistics for the second quarter of 2020/21.
His spokesperson, Lirandzu Themba, says these statistics will show the crime levels during the time when the country moved from Lockdown Level 3 to level 2 and 1 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The media briefing on crime statistics will come a day after his second visit to the Free State following several farm attacks and murders, including the killing of farm manager Brendin Horner outside Paul Roux.
The 21-year-old Horner's death, whose body was found tied to a pole in an open space situated at De Rots on October 1, has since sparked outrage countrywide following the violent Senekal protests.
Cele's second visit to the Free State forms part of a follow up to his previous meeting, with organised farming community organisations following Horner's murder. He has vowed to attend to a number of rural safety concerns, including the escalating farm attacks and stock theft.
Following this meeting, the media briefing on Friday is expected to paint a clearer picture on police measures to address farm murders and other contact crimes.
