The IEC confirms the ANC retained most municipal wards that were hotly contested in the November 11 by-elections.

In the North West, out of the six wards that were contested, the ANC retained four seats and won one seat from the DA, and the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) won one seat from the DA.

In the Northern Cape, the ANC managed to retain 17 seats out of 20 municipal ward by-elections. Voter turnout in the province on average was 49.31%.

In the Free State, out of the four wards that were contested, the ANC retained three seats and the DA won one seat. Electoral Operation Manager in the province, Itumeleng Liba, explains the by-elections in the province ran without many hiccups and voter turnout in the province on average was just over 40%.

OFM News previously reported that 30 municipal by-elections were set to kick off in Central SA with four municipal ward by-elections in the Free State, six in the North West, and 20 in the Northern Cape.

Elections in the three provinces formed part of the 95 municipal ward by-elections that took place in 55 municipalities in different parts of the country.

They were the first to be held under the Covid-19 pandemic. The electorate now further confirms they were good preparation for the municipal elections scheduled to take place in 2021.
