The Democratic Alliance (DA) Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL) in the Free State, Leona Kleynhans, says ANC SG Ace Magashule's day in court has been a long time coming.

She says the DA is very happy that Magashule has been brought to book on charges of fraud and corruption which are linked to the failed asbestos project worth R255 million. She says a great deal of injustice was done to the people of the Free State and those responsible must account. Magashule handed himself over to the Hawks on Friday morning ahead of his court appearance in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court.

Kleynhans says she has been advocating for the arrest of alleged perpetrators in the asbestos case since 2015. She says their project was simply to get money out of the government coffers and into those of various politicians and their cronies.

"So we are relieved today and we hope that justice will be done. He is being charged with fraud, corruption and money laundering in terms of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act.

"Now, this is not only a matter of oversight, in section 34, this particular Act states that if you are an authority and become aware of crime that is busy taking place, you are equally guilty if you do not act to stop or report it," she adds.

Magashule is now joining former Mangaung Metro Municipality Mayor Olly Mlamleli, businessman Edwin Sodi, and others, in the case where millions are alleged to have been squandered.

The Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday postponed the controversial Free State asbestos audit case to 19 February 2021.

OFM News' Olebogeng Motse reported that the state said this is to enable authorities to continue further investigations into the R255 million project and to arrest three more suspects embroiled in the matter, of which Magashule is the first.
