Safety of #FSAsbestosGate prosecutor a major concern─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 11:53 Fri, 13 Nov 2020
Concerns over the safety of the prosecutor in the controversial asbestos audit case are at a high after his home was broken into last week.
Advocate Johan de Nysschen confirmed rumours on the ground that his Bloemfontein home was indeed broken into last week Saturday by unknown suspects. The prosecutor would not elaborate further on the details around the incident.
De Nysschen who was on Friday accompanied by bodyguards at the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court, tells OFM News a case has been opened with police and an investigation into the incident is underway. This isn’t the first time concerns have been raised by authorities over De Nysschen’s safety.
On Monday, the advocate will return to the Free State High Court where he is the prosecutor in another headline-grabbing criminal case - the murder trial of Bloemfontein businessman Louis Siemens.
It was in that murder trial in 2019 that concerns around De Nysschen’s safety were first raised and he was assigned bodyguards. Free State police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, tells OFM News “no case of burglary has been reported under De Nysschen’s name per se but a case of housebreaking and theft was opened at the Park Road Police Station last week Saturday under a female complainant’s name - presumably his wife's.
Meanwhile, Ace Magashule has arrived at the courthouse and is currently in the dock. He was reported to have handed himself over to the Hawks on Friday morning at the Absa Building. Presently media are being restricted from entering courtroom 20 due to a lack of space.
The situation at the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court turned chaotic on Friday as ANC members and ardent supporters of Magashule breached additional security enforcements trying to gain entry into the courthouse. The leader of the DA in the Free State Legislature, Roy Jankielsohn, was also allegedly assaulted and manhandled by supporters in their effort to demonstrate their support ahead of the court appearance.
