Department spokesperson, Geoffrey van der Merwe, tells OFM News that the department is shocked by the incident at a local primary school in Kimberley.

He says they welcome the arrest of the teacher in question and adds that the department will now initiate its own internal investigation against the accused.

Van der Merwe says it's alleged that the 41-year-old teacher raped the 13-year-old teenage girl on several occasions between September and October 2020.

Police spokesperson, Mohale Ramatseba, says the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit is investigating the case.

Ramatseba adds that the suspect was arrested on Friday, November 13, and should be appearing in court soon.

"Every child is a national asset and we should protect their well-being at all times. We view this case in a very serious light and therefore it will receive our urgent attention. The department appeals to parents and all school communities to guard and protect our learners and to always know the whereabouts of your child, especially as we approach the festive season," Van der Merwe further adds.
