NW man nabbed for FS stolen firearm─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 06:54 Mon, 16 Nov 2020
A 30-year-old North West suspect arrested in possession of an unlicensed firearm belonging to a Welkom man is expected to make his first court appearance on Monday.
The 30-year-old was arrest last week Friday for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in Kanana after the police followed a lead regarding a man, who was allegedly threatening to kill a person at the railway.
Police spokesperson, Adéle Myburgh, says the suspect fled from the police when he saw them approaching and was seen throwing a firearm to a nearby house. Once caught, the suspect was found with the ammunition inside his bag.
Myburgh, in a statement, says it was later discovered that the discarded firearm and ammunition belonged to a Welkom man in the Free State who passed away in 2011.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Orkney Magistrate's Court facing charges of the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The North West Provincial Commissioner Sello Kwena, has meanwhile warned no criminal activity will be tolerated in the province and sent a reminder that there are two months left for any illegal/unwanted firearms, and/or ammunition to be surrendered to the police during the amnesty period that will end in 2021 January 31.
