NW Premier called to action─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 06:08 Fri, 20 Nov 2020
Communities in North West have called on North West Premier Job Mokgoro to ensure that all three spheres of government fight against crime, fraud and corruption in the province.
The North West Public Anti-Corruption Dialogue held in Madibeng Local Municipality saw hundreds of community members express their frustrations with the state of municipalities in the province and their lack of service delivery.
Mokgoro has been urged to implement consequence management measures and deal with those implicated in corrupt activities, especially in municipalities of the province.
The North West Public Anti-Corruption Dialogue held on Thursday forms part of the Anti Fraud Week commemorated countrywide to raise awareness against fraud and corruption.
The dialogue also comes just weeks after a delegate from the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) in Parliament visited the province and engaged several distressed municipalities. It was during this visit when the NCOP raised concerns over North West municipalities stating that many of them are still faced with financial mismanagement, lack of political leadership, and high vacancy rates, among other issues.
They highlighted that this is exacerbated by the R314 million loss they incurred when they invested with the now liquidated VBS Mutual Bank.
The administrator of Madibeng Local Municipality, John Motlogelwa, and Mayor of Mahikeng, Betty Diakanyo, both confirmed the financial rut experienced in their municipalities, stating that they need urgent intervention from the government.
