Police issue #16DaysofActivism warning | News Article

With just a day to the start of 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, the police in the North West and Northern Cape have sent a stern warning against the abuse of women and children.

The police appeal to communities to report any cases of Gender-based Violence (GBV) and child abuse, following several arrests this month.

In the North West, a man was sentenced to life in prison for the rape of a 78-year-old woman on Monday while in the Northern Cape, the police have confirmed the recent sentencing of a 26-year-old man to ten years imprisonment after he was found guilty of attempted murder of his six-year-old son.

Police spokesperson, Dimakatso Mooi, said on January 16 the police received a complaint of child abuse from a concerned community member and upon investigation, the child was found with multiple injuries on his back, neck and face. The 26-year-old father had assaulted the child with a belt and choked him with a chain.

The police in the two provinces call on communities to join hands with the police as the country prepares for the 16 Days of Activism Campaign held from 25 November to 10 December every year.

The 16 Days of Activism Campaign and how cases are being handled will also be debated in parliament on Tuesday afternoon.
