Police warrant officer Bongo Bucebo says everyone should play a role in reporting crimes against children and gender-based violence. Everyone has a responsibility towards their children to ensure they receive a decent upbringing, adds Bongo.

SAPS Captain Martin Buffett told OFM News that the police are ready for this campaign to combat gender-based violence against woman and children.

Ramaphosa has condemned the acts of sexual violence, abuse, and femicide, and on a number of occasions this year referred to GBV as the “second pandemic” that the country is facing.

The 16 Days of Activism campaign for no violence against women and children is a United Nations campaign which takes place annually from 25 November to 10 December. Given the scourge of gender-based violence in South Africa, which is declared a national concern, the government is implementing the Emergency Response Action Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, which was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa in September 2019.

The campaign forms the centre point of government’s comprehensive 365 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children. 

During the current 16-day period, government together with civil society and the private sector will host a series of community and sector dialogues and activities to foster a collaborative effort in dealing with GBV.
