The Free State has recorded the country's third-highest Covid-19 death toll in the last 24 hours.
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize Wednesday night reported that 118 deaths have been recorded in the past 24 hours, with the highest number recorded in the Eastern Cape (51), followed by the Western Cape (30), then the Free State (24).
The 118 deaths recorded now brings the total number of deaths in the country to 21 201. The total number of Covid-19 positive cases in the country stands at 775 502 with Gauteng, the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal remaining the epicentre.
Mkhize took to his social media platforms to raise concerns over the escalating number of positive cases in the Eastern Cape stating that it now accounts for between 50% and 55% of the daily new Covid-19 cases. He announced that together with his team they will be heading to the province today to help deal with the resurgence.
Mkhize has further appealed to members of the public to continue observing all Covid-19 regulations.
