#16DaysOfActivism: Bfn love affair turned deadly | News Article

A fatal encounter between a Bloemfontein man (36) and his girlfriend (29) took place yesterday afternoon at the La Fontana flats in King Edward Road, Bloemfontein, just hours after the launch of the 16 Days of Activism campaign.

Police spokesperson, Thandi Mbambo, says the couple were under the influence of alcohol before an argument broke out between them. The argument became violent as the boyfriend grabbed an empty beer bottle and hit the girlfriend with it, says Mbambo. It is alleged that the girlfriend left and went to the living room. She then returned holding a knife, attacked the boyfriend and stabbed him on the right side of the neck. On arrival, the paramedics declared the man dead. The girlfriend was immediately arrested by police. A case of murder was opened and the suspect will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's court soon.

The couple stayed in a makeshift store turned into a living room at the flats managed by National Real Estate. The man was the caretaker of these flats.

The 16 Days of Activism campaign for no violence against women and children takes place annually from 25 November to 10 December. The campaign forms the centre point of the government’s comprehensive 365 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children. Gender-based violence in South Africa is declared a national concern. The government is implementing an Emergency Response Action Plan towards Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, which was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa in September 2019.
