#PrellerSquareShooting: Cross-examination of witness continues─── LUCKY NKUYANE 12:38 Fri, 27 Nov 2020
The cross-examination of a convicted killer and state witness, Xolisile Botha Mbebeto, continues in the Bloemfontein High Court on Friday.
He has been in the witness stand the entire week, detailing his involvement and his relationship with alleged mastermind Stanley Bakili in organising a hit on CityMed's former Managing Director Louis Siemens.
Bakili is one of eight men accused of the murder of Siemens, who was gunned down in 2018 in the basement parking of the Preller Square Shopping complex. Masilo Koenane, legal representative for Bakili - accused number one - questioned Mbebeto’s version of his meeting with his client and how he came in possession of the firearm used in the hit. Koenane put it to Mbebeto that Bakili never gave an instruction – as alleged – to kill anyone. Mbebeto is currently serving a jail sentence of 22 years after being found guilty of pulling the trigger and killing Siemens.
Koenane told Mbebeto that Bakili was arrested only in 2018 and that he was lying about meeting Bakili in custody in 2017.
Mbebeto stood up from his chair and clapped hands, describing what Koenane had said as a "miracle". Koenane again told Mbebeto that he killed Siemens because he wanted to rob him of his phone but Mbebeto rubbished the claim and asked what was so special about Siemens' phone. He also questioned why would he have specifically targeted Siemens. This after Koenane told him that his client had said that he never gave out an instruction to anyone for someone to be killed.
Mbebeto continued to deny that he was contradicting himself and blamed a police official who wrote down his statement for not writing what he told him to.
Bakili and seven other men are in the dock for the murder of Siemens. The cross-examination of Mbebeto continues.
