The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the North West says it is studying the Supreme Court of Appeals' (SCA) judgment, set to acquit two accused of killing Matlhomola Mosweu in Coligny in 2017.

NPA Regional spokesperson, Henry Mamothame, says the prosecuting authority wants to understand where exactly the SCA disagrees with the North West High Court on its conviction of Phillip Schutte and Pieter Dooreward.

On Friday the SCA overturned the High Court's sentence and set the two free after it found that the state did not prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt; the state witness had contradicted himself; and the police failed to properly investigate the matter.

Meanwhile, Afriforum's Kallie Kriel says the civil rights organisation welcomes the decision taken by the SCA because they knew that the two were innocent.

AfriForum funded the appeal following the conviction of the two men in March 2019, when they were sentenced to 23 and 18 years in jail respectively.

Schutte and Dooreward are accused of killing Mosweu in April 2017, after he was allegedly caught stealing sunflowers.

Meanwhile, the EFF leader, Julius Malema, vowed to appeal to the Supreme Court of Appeals' (SCA) decision.

Malema says if the NPA is not appealing the decision the party will appeal it.
