NW man gets 15 years for girlfriend’s murder | News Article

A 43-year-old North West man will spend the coming 15 years in jail after he was found guilty of killing his girlfriend in 2019.

His conviction came as President Cyril Ramaphosa held an interactive session with civil society organisations to mark the 16 Days of Activism Campaign for No Violence against Women and Children.

The Atamelang Regional Court this week slapped Buti George Lebitsa with the the hefty sentence for killing his 32-year-old girlfriend Thembi Betty Lobakaeng, following an argument on the morning of Sunday 29 September last year.

Lobakaeng's body was found by her neighbours on her bed with head injuries, at Senthumule Extension 8 in Delareyville.

She was declared dead on the scene by Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS).

Lebitsa was arrested a day after the murder and has been in custody since.

Meanwhile, Ramaphosa's virtual interactive session comprised of the inter-ministerial committee on gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide, survivors of gender-based violence, religious leaders and civil society organisations.

The dialogue touched on issues raised by communities, discussed objectives of the campaign, and also deliberated on the National Strategic Plan on GBV.
