Minister to brief Parliament over NW─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 07:22 Mon, 30 Nov 2020
The state of provincial and local government in the North West will come under scrutiny this week.
This, as the Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs Minister, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, and the Inter-Ministerial Task Team on North West is expected to brief Parliament. The briefing set to take place on Thursday before members of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) is expected to shed light on the progress that has been made since the province was placed under administration.
OFM News previously reported that President Cyril Ramaphosa placed the entire province under administration in 2018 following sporadic service delivery protests and calls for former premier Supra Mahumapelo to resign.
Following months of unrest, Ramaphosa placed the entire province under administration and appointed a task Team led by Dlamini-Zuma to bring stability into the province and address services delivery issues in provincial departments and municipalities.
The briefing by Dlamini-Zuma before the NCOP will come just weeks after a delegate from Parliament embarked on a week-long visit to the province to engage distressed municipalities.
It was during this visit when the delegate said municipalities in the North West need urgent intervention as they are still plagued with financial mismanagement, lack of political governance, and still battle to provide services to residents despite more than 50% of them being placed under administration.
