The Speaker of Parliament, Thandi Modise, is expected to appear before the Potchefstroom Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday morning.

This, as the trial where she will face six charges of animal cruelty, is expected to get underway. The trial is expected to run for the next three days.

Adv. Gerrie Nel, Head of AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit, is privately prosecuting Modise on behalf of the National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA). The case dates back to 2014 when the NSPCA obtained a warrant to inspect animals on Modise’s over R4 million farm in the North West after receiving a tip-off that animals on the property had been abandoned for months.

After visiting the farm, the NSPCA said it was one of the worst cases of farm animal cruelty they have seen. In total, 79 animals are said to have died as a result with 58 of them being pigs. Whilst Modise has since distanced herself from any form of animal cruelty and blamed her former farm manager for the poor condition, nature conservers and some social media users have called for action again her.
