The Free State MEC for Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs has committed efforts of the department to make a policy which speaks directly to the needs of disabled people in the province.

MEC Makalo Mohale says despite the fact that there is no policy or a blueprint in place yet, which speaks to the needs of the disabled, his department will make sure that there is one. He says his department will amend all policies which speak to job preservations and opportunities for the disabled. Mohale adds they are serious and committed to ensure that there is a policy framework which then makes it compulsory for the department in assisting the disabled.

"It is not one of those activities where we want to tick a box that at a particular day we went to speak with the disabled. We do this because we really care and we understand that on our own we may not comprehend your issues correctly, and that is why we want this so that you can guide us," Mohale adds.

He was speaking at a two-day event at the Gariep Dam to commemorate International Disability Month.

"There has never been that type of a commitment as a policy, or there is no blueprint for it other than the commitment to say we will remain to commit to ensuring that the opportunities that arise - that they must all be inclusive of disabilities. As much as I am not proud that there is no steadfast policy in terms of job reservations, but out of this session and out of this reminder I can commit that [I] will ensure we amend all our policies in so far as opportunities are concerned," Mohale further adds.
