#FestiveSeason: Over 1000 arrested in NW─── 05:20 Wed, 09 Dec 2020

Police in North West, working together with other law enforcement agencies, arrested 1 243 suspects for various offences during the Safer Festive Season joint operations conducted between Friday 16 October and Tuesday 8 December 2020.
Police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, said in a release the suspects include 141 that were arrested for contact crimes, 27 for property-related crimes, 173 for crimes detected as a result of police action such as illegal possession of firearms and driving under the influence of alcohol while others were held for many other crimes.
During the operations and as part of enforcing compliance with the Liquor Act, 556 fines were issued for liquor-related offences that included drinking and being drunk in public places. In the process, shebeens were also shut down.
Furthermore, the operations led to the confiscation of 7 firearms, 83 rounds of ammunition, 5 stolen/robbed motor vehicles, 6 knives, 12 sheep, liquor, illicit cigarettes, and different electronic and audiovisual equipment, as well as various drugs such as nyaope, Mandrax tablets, CAT, crystal meth and dagga.
In addition, 1 168 fines and compliance notices relating to the Road Traffic Act, Liquor Act and the Second-Hand Goods Act were issued to individuals and businesses.
The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, welcomed the successes achieved and pointed out that the operations will continue as part of tightening the grip against criminals and criminality during the entire festive season and beyond to ensure that members of the community are and feel safe.
