The Democratic Alliance in the Free State gathered on Wednesday afternoon in support of three men who are walking from East London, in the Eastern Cape, to Senekal in the Free State in support of the fight against farm murders.

The Free State leader of the opposition party and DA Caucus Leader in the Free State Legislature, Roy Jankielsohn, was also present. He says the surge in crime, but specifically violence, is affecting the farming community. It is important that we all stand together against the biggest threat to food security in South Africa, says Jankielsohn. Violence on farms affects farmers, farmworkers and the entire farming community, as the agricultural sector keeps our rural economy going in the Free State.

Jankielsohn says without an agricultural sector people won’t have jobs in rural communities and our local economies will decline even more. He further adds people need to have food on the table and it’s our farmers who produce those commodities that allow us the food and the clothes that we consume and use every single day.

OFM News previously reported on that Petrus Sitho, Mangaliso Nyila and Sakhumzi Qave have taken it upon themselves to walk hundreds of kilometres from East London to Senekal supporting the fight against farm murders. Sitho they have received threats, but their purpose is to walk to Senekal and then to Paul Roux to visit the family of Brendin Horner, the 21-year-old farm manager from Paul Roux in the Free State who was allegedly killed by suspected stock thieves.
