#CIT robber nabbed in NC | News Article

A suspect linked to a series of Cash-In-Transit (CIT) heists where security officials were either disarmed or shot in the Northern Cape has been captured by the Hawks.

The provincial Hawks spokesperson, Nomthandazo Mnisi, says the 39-year-old Thapelo Sithonga was nabbed in Pampierstad on Tuesday. She says this after he had been linked to three cash-in-transit robberies that took place in 2018 in Kuruman and Pampierstad.

In one of these heists where it is alleged that Sithonga was involved, two Fidelity security officers were approached by six gun-wielding men at a wholesale store in Kuruman on 4 January 2018 and the suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. Mnisi says the suspect made his first court appearance on Thursday 10 December at the Kuruman Magistrate’s Court on three counts of robbery and his case was postponed to Monday 14 December for a legal representative. Sithonga remains in custody.

Mnisi adds that in another incident on 9 October 2018, three Fidelity security officers were disarmed by six armed suspects as they were collecting cash at Chicken-Inn fast food in Kuruman and again the suspects got away with an undisclosed amount of money.

“In another incident at Pampierstad, three security officials were robbed of an undisclosed amount of money by six suspects. One security officer was shot in the leg during this robbery that took place at the shopping complex in Pampierstad on 13 December 2018,” she further adds.
