#AsbestosGate: Magashule before Integrity Commission | News Article
ANC Secretary-General, Ace Magashule

Former Free State Premier and now ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule is expected to present himself before the party's integrity commission today.

Magashule is charged with corruption, relating to a R255 million asbestos tender, which was awarded during his tenure as premier of the province.

President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed Magashule's appearance earlier this week stating that he will have to answer to the ANC's Integrity Commission.

His appearance follows weeks of speculation as to whether he will step aside pending corruption charges, and comes just over a month since a warrant of arrest was issued by the Hawks; which saw him facing several corruption-related charges in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court.

He is accused of receiving kickbacks from a  contract between the Free State Department of Human Settlements and a joint venture between Diamond Hill and Edwin Sodi's Blackhead Consulting. The Gauteng based joint venture was awarded a R255 million contract to audit, assess and remove hazardous asbestos roofs in the province.

OFM News has reported that Sodi's testimony before the Zondo Commission has revealed that the joint venture was awarded this contract, despite having no expertise in the field nor accreditation to handle asbestos material - and that several donations were later made to the party and those politically connected.

Whilst Magashule is currently out on a R200 000 bail and his case postponed to February 19 next year, the ANC Integrity Committee is expected draft a way forward following his appearance today.
