NW investigates learner deaths─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 06:21 Mon, 14 Dec 2020
The North West Department of Education has confirmed investigations into the death of three learners from Rethusegile Secondary school in Lethabong Village near Rustenburg will start on Monday.
This, after three Grade 12 learners died in a taxi accident after attending an "After examinations celebration" on Friday.
The death of the learners made news over the weekend when the taxi they were travelling in overturned on the R511 road leaving 11 more learners and the driver injured.
It is alleged that 14 learners were passengers in a taxi, transporting them from a resort in the vicinity of Assen near Brits back to Lethabong.
The three Grade 12 learners who died are Isaac Nkosi (18), Tshepiso Moagi (21) and Amogelang Diphoko (20).
The department's Elias Malindi confirms at least seven learners were discharged from the hospital after medical observation whilst four learners are still at the hospital receiving medical attention.
"On behalf of the department l would like to express my heartfelt condolences to the 3 bereaved families. As a department we are in difficult times as we did not expect to lose three learners at the same time like this.
"These learners are part of the 2020 cohort which wrote their final examinations during difficult times of Covid19 pandemic. We thought they will shape the future of this country with the skill they obtained from our schools," said the department's MEC Mmaphefo Matsemela in a statement.
Details pertaining to the funeral and the memorial service of the three learners are expected to be communicated this week.
