North West Premier, Job Mokgoro

Teenagers aged between 15 and 19 years of age have been identified as the main carriers of the coronavirus (COVID-19) amidst a resurgence in the North West.

Premier Job Mokgoro said this following the release of a risk adjusted report focusing on the Provincial Resurgence Plan. The Bojanala and Dr Kenneth Kaunda districts have been identified as possible high risk areas.

Mokgoro says the command council, of which he is the chairperson, also received a report on the provincial integrated festive season plan, which addresses the state of readiness to manage among others super-spreader events, and how service delivery will be carried out during this period.

"The Command Council stressed the need for parents of teenage children to manage and monitor their behaviour. This, following recent confirmation that a large number of new cases were of teenagers aged between 15 and 19," Mokgoro adds.

A Risk Adjusted Report indicates that the rate of new infections in Rustenburg, Matlosana, JB Marks, Mahikeng and Madibeng sub-districts were progressing towards a resurgence.

Mokgoro, however, says efforts by the department of Health to engage key stakeholders, particularly in the mining sector, industries and schools, which are main high risk areas, on plans to manage the return-to-work after the festive season.

This comes as President Cyril Ramaphosa is on Monday evening set to a dress the country on development in relation to the country's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bojanala and Matlosana in the province remains the epicentre of the virus, with Matlosana having recorded more deaths and infections. So far the province has 35, 703 cumulative cases, 556 reports deaths and 33,918 recoveries. This means that province has about 1,219 active cases.
