Assault cases against the police a concern─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 14:39 Mon, 04 Jan 2021
The Northern Cape and North West have reported the least cases against the police.
According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, the highest number of cases against members of the SAPS were recorded in the Western Cape, followed by Gauteng and KZN.
The Eastern Cape and the Free State are also among those with high cases. The directorate’s 2019/20 annual report indicates most cases laid against the police are for assault.
Discharging an official firearm is ranked the second complaint against the police. OFM News’ Katleho Morapela reports statistics indicate that 235 cases have been laid against the police in the Northern Cape for assault while 226 have been laid in North West.
The report indicates that assault by members of the South African Police Service is a great concern, with a total of 3 754 cases having been laid countrywide.
Death as a result of police action has also been indicated as a concern, with 373 cases recorded.
Whilst most cases were still recorded in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, the report confirms the number of deaths in police custody in the North West was 8% - indicating only a 2% difference as compared to the notorious KwaZulu-Natal.
