#CoronavirusNW: Health intensifies awareness campaign─── LUCKY NKUYANE 09:15 Tue, 05 Jan 2021
The North West province is set to intensify its COVID-19 campaign after the festive season during which a huge number of infections were recorded countrywide.
The Health MEC Madoda Sambatha is expected to lead COVID-19 awareness and compliance campaigns in Mahikeng and Ramotshere Moiloa on Tuesday amidst the surge of the new variant of the virus. The two campaigns do not, however, include the Bojanala hotspot which includes Rustenburg with over 3,700 active cases and over 160 confirmed deaths.
Sambatha says with the numbers of new daily infections and active cases climbing, there is a need for all stakeholders to participate in raising awareness and ensuring adherence to prevention measures. He adds that residents need to avoid crowded areas, keep social distancing, wear a mask, sanitise and wash hands.
According to the latest statistics by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, the North West has 5,704 active cases after 35,429 patients recovered from the virus, with 602 deaths recorded from the 41,735 reported cases.
“These campaigns follow other successful campaigns conducted during the December festive season. The campaigns have thus far targeted the hotspots,” Sambatha further adds.
He also expected to target places and areas such as Central Business Districts (CBDs), Post Offices, Taxi Ranks, Shopping Centers and other key points.
The two campaigns to be led by Sambatha will start as follows:
Date: Tuesday, 5 January 2020
Starting point: Mahikeng Museum
Time: 09h00
Date: Wednesday, 6 January 2020
Starting point: Zeerust Taxi Rank
Time: 09h00
