This is the second unrelated arrest that the Hawks have been able to effect in just a space of three months at Christiana in the North West, close to Kimberley in the Northern Cape.

The Hawks spokesperson, Tlangelani Rikhotso, in a statement indicates that the two suspects aged 46 and 51 were arrested for illegal dealing and possession of unpolished diamonds on Wednesday 6 January 2021. Rikhotso says the Hawks confiscated unpolished diamonds worth approximately R50 000 for further investigation.

The duo will appear before the Bloemhof District Court on Friday 8 January 2021.

In November 2020, the Hawks nabbed a 25-year-old man during a similar operation for being in possession of an alleged uncut diamond.

The Northern Cape Hawks spokesperson, Nomthandazo Mnisi, said the suspect was arrested after a potential buyer purchased the object amounting to R46 000 in Christiana in the North West. She said the arrest followed after a tip which contained information regarding the suspect(s) selling unpolished diamonds.
