#CoronavirusNW: Amateur football continues─── 17:07 Mon, 18 Jan 2021
Amateur football has been continuing in the Tswaing Local Municipality in North West.
This, despite Covid-19 regulations not allowing soccer at lower levels to take place.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) has suspended lower league football due to the pandemic.
Tswaing Local Football Association (TWALFA) Secretary, Mpho Mohologae, told OFM News that teams not registered with the association are difficult to control, and continues to play despite being told not to organise games.
A soccer match was held on Sunday at the Letsopa Stadium, with spectators present. Matches also reportedly took place in Delareyville.
Modisaotsile Molumuagae, the owner of Love Zone FC that plays in the Ngaka Modiri Molema regional league, says he withdrew his team from playing until it is safe to play again - and encouraged other teams to do so as well.
North West police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone strongly condemned the situation, adding these types of gatherings are prohibited in terms of Reg 36 (8)(b).
A team manager, who wished to remain anonymous, said he is aware of the implications but insists that his players are adamant to play irrespective.
