NW EFF rubbishes bribery allegations for land─── LUCKY NKUYANE 08:36 Tue, 19 Jan 2021
The EFF in the North West has squashed residents' allegations that one of its councillors in Matlosana asked them for R6 000 bribes in exchange for a piece of land.
The allegations surfaced amidst the demolition of over 100 erected structures in Jacaranda near Manzil Park in Klerksdorp on Monday.
The provincial secretary, Papiki Babuile, tells OFM News that the allegations are pure lies. He says around December 2020 an established committee in Jacaranda was informed that residents would be evicted and that prompted the committee to ask everyone to contribute at least R50 each towards the funding of a court action against the eviction.
The municipality says the demolition follows a court order which was granted in favour of the city to deter any illegal invasions of the land in question.
Babuile adds that residents have so far managed to gather at least R10 000 but they were advised that the court action will not cost anything less than R20 000.
Meanwhile, a resident - who wished to remain anonymous - says she was called by a friend who informed her that the shacks were being demolished. This source says a lot of informal residents have suffered many damages during these demolitions. She informed OFM News this was the EFF's fault because its councillor did not do his due diligence when giving out these pieces of land to residents. She adds that the said councillor had asked for this money from residents.
Meanwhile, in a statement, the municipality says it had obtained a court order barring the illegal invasion and/or occupation of the land in question.
Members of the South African Police Services (SAPS) had also been deployed to the area. Police spokesperson, Amanda Funani, told OFM News that the men in blue were only there to maintain law and order.
