In response to the current health crisis, the private school group Curro announced that learning at all its schools nationwide will move online for Grade 1 to 12 learners, starting on Tuesday.

The Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa (Isasa) said on Monday that private schools that had opted to remain open were not breaking any laws. Despite this, the school's spokesperson, Marí Lategan, says the group wants to play its part on relieving the pressure on the health system and fight the pandemic. Lategan further added that Curro will continue online learning as long as required.

Isasa’s executive director, Lebogang Montjane, said “there is no regulation that precludes an independent school from opening at this point in time, so it’s really important that those schools are not breaking the law if they have pupils on campus at the moment.”

Regardless, Lategan says that Curro schools will use the next few days to realign plans. Staff will continue to provide a full day’s classes via remote learning, from Monday to Friday, across Grade 1 to 12, nationally. This arrangement will remain in place as long as required and regular and constructive engagement with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and other key roleplayers will continue to ensure Curro’s support in the interest of national health, adds Lategan.
