Heavy rainfall presents challenges at Harrismith | News Article

Following the rainfall experienced in the past weeks, there has been a huge improvement in the dam level of the Sterkfontein Dam at Harrismith in the Free State with both the Wilge River and the joining Nuwejaarspruit contributing.

However, this came with some treatment challenges as muddy water from the raw water run-off requires more chemicals for treatment.

According to the Maluti-A-Phofung Water spokesperson, Tebogo Kwakwa, some of the treatment processes were also negatively affected.

She says following the above-mentioned developments, the water treatment plant's processes were also negatively affected. These include sand filters and plant reservoirs.

She further says this plant will be cleaned intensively on Wednesday after it caused an interruption in water distribution.

Furthermore, the Fika Patso Dam's water level is standing at 60%, the Metsimatsho Dam at over 100%, and the Sterkfontein Dam is at 95% at the moment.
