Drainage criticised after #FSflooding─── 14:35 Thu, 28 Jan 2021
Many residents raised their concerns about the ineffective stormwater drainage system's functionality and holding capacity after heavy rain flooded some houses in Koffiefontein in the Free State on Wednesday.
Letsemeng's municipal spokesperson, Jimmy Mokgwetsi, confirms that the drainage system is deficient, however, says it is due to the illegal dumping of goods, consequently blocking the system.
Mokgwetsi informs OFM News that the counsellors have assessed the extent of the damage caused by the heavy rainfall and that they have since ensured that the drainage systems and canals be cleaned regularly. Mokgwetsi says the municipality has identified areas where residents could be accommodated in the event of another flood.
He further says the municipality’s financial muscle is strained and it is presently unable to finance the upgrades necessary. Despite this, the municipality has submitted various business plans to other sector departments seeking financial aid.
The municipality urges community members to refrain from any illegal dumping into the canal and drainage pipes to ensure decent water flow.
Mokwetsi says, everything considered, the municipality has reacted and responded accordingly to ensure that the damage caused by the flooding is contained.
