#FSflood victims given shelter─── 06:34 Fri, 29 Jan 2021
Flash flooding in the Free State this week caused long term challenges for some communities in the province.
Several community members of Masimong, Phuthaditjhaba, have been affected. Coordinator of the Thabo Mofutsanyana Disaster Team, Sthembiso Mthombeni, says houses in Masimong were flooded with water 30cm deep.
Mthombeni further added at least 17 families had to leave their homes due to the flooding.
Another 15 families from Mphatlalatsane, also in the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality, experienced flash flooding.
Evacuated families were taken to AgriQwa, in Phuthaditjhaba, where they received cooked meals, blankets and mattresses.
“Later we received a report of about 13 houses in Slovo Park, Qwaqwa, also faced with flooding. Community members from Masimong and Slovo Park insisted that they join us later as they preferred storing their possessions in a safer place on their own. Regardless, we managed to secure a place to store property of people who were evacuated,” says Mthombeni.
Red Cross is set to join Mthombeni and his team today. “No injuries or fatalities have occurred,” Mthombeni concludes.
