NW municipalities in spotlight; Dodovu elected new Chair─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 13:56 Fri, 29 Jan 2021
The financial state of North West municipalities and their ability to provide services are once again under scrutiny.
This, as Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee on Section 100 Intervention in the North West Province sat earlier on Friday to discuss the province. The committee expressed concern at the state of municipalities in the province, stating that a number of them are still plagued with financial mismanagement, irregular expenditure, high vacancy rates and the inability to generate revenue. The Committee’s Secretary, Nkululeko Mangweni, explained that in efforts to continue redressing challenges experienced in the province, they will have to elect a new chairperson. Current chairperson of the Select Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, as well as Water and Sanitation, China Dodovu, has subsequently been nominated and elected as the Chair of the Ad Hoc Committee.
With Cabinet having approved the withdrawal of the intervention by the Inter-Ministerial Task Team led by Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Dodovu told the Committee more still needs to be done to improve municipalities in the North West.
Dodovu has previously served as an MPL in the North West Legislature, as well as the MEC for Cooperative Governance.
Committee members, including Kenny Mmoiemang, have expressed support for Dodovu. He has meanwhile pledged to lead from the front stating that much work still awaits them in this province.
The entire province was placed under administration in May 2018 following sporadic service delivery protests calling for the resignation of former Premier Supra Mahumapelo.
Dodovu has meanwhile told the committee “moving forward we will look at what is expected of the committee to bring more stability to the province, and draw up a plan on what needs to be done”.
He confirmed that the Committee will have to “hit the ground running, decide when they are going to visit the province, and draw up a strategy to accomplish this in adherence with the current Covid-19 regulations” as they are expected to report before the House on March 26.
