#Covid19: Burial procedures disturbingly disregarded | News Article

The Bojanala District Municipality in the North West, which is one of the municipalities hit hard by COVID-19, has raised concerns with how families of deceased Covid-19 patients conduct their burials.

The municipality, which include Brits and Rustenburg, says it received disturbing reports of how some of these families act recklessly during burials of their loved ones. The municipal spokesperson, Archie Babeile, in a statement says in one of their weekly reports it was indicated that some family member had physically opened the coffin and viewed the deceased during the burial. This despite a directive by lockdown regulations which prohibits the viewing of family members who passed away due to the coronavirus-related complications.

Babeile adds that some of the families would also hide the information from the funeral parlours that the deceased died from Covid-19 related complications.

While the Bojanala District Municipality remains a Covid-19 hotspot and reported 27 080 cases, it contributes 47% of the total number of reported cases in the province. The District Municipal Health Services inspectors are making serious progress as far as the training of Funeral Undertakers across the district,” he adds.

Meanwhile, the municipality has over 2 944 active cases, 284 deaths, and 23 726 recoveries from 26 954 cumulative cases. The municipality has the second highest death rate in the province.
