Northern Cape Premier Zamani Saul and his cabinet will on Friday visit the John Taolo Gaetsewe District, following heavy rainfalls and floods.

The towns of Ritchie, Kuruman and Kathu are among those that have been hit hard by recent heavy downpours resulting in flooded roads and houses.

The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) on Wednesday issued a statement warning motorists of damaged roads and appealed to those travelling on the N14 some 42km outside Kuruman to make use of alternative routes.

Sanral said as a result of heavy rains, the roadway was flooded, and a culvert collapsed. The agency further warned road users travelling between Kimberley and Upington, to avoid the N14, N8 and R31, and to rather take the N12 from Kimberley, linking up with the N10 just before Britstown and then travel via the N10 to Upington.

Addressing the media on the province’s state of readiness for the Covid-19 rollout plan, Saul confirmed extensive damages to roads, houses, and other infrastructure, and that he will be leading the Provincial Executive to the district to assess the situation this morning.

Saul highlighted that damaged roads might pose a challenge to the distribution of Covid-19 vaccines to various parts of the province.
