Heavy rain damages NC road infrastructure | News Article

The Northern Cape Province has experienced abnormal rainfall that continues to weaken road infrastructure.

The South African National Roads Agency's (Sanral) spokesperson, Melany Kühn, tells OFM News that the N14, section 8, outside Kuruman, has been closed because of roadways being flooded and a collapsed culvert. The N8 has been repaired and declared partially operable with one lane open with a stop and go system in place and traffic officials on site.

The extent of damage has warranted a full road closure of the N14 between Kuruman and Vryburg, says Kühn.

She advises road users travelling between Kimberley and Upington to avoid the N14, N8 and R31. She suggests that motorists make use of the N12 from Kimberley which links up with the N10 just before Britstown and later travel along the N10 to Upington.

Furthermore heavier rain is expected throughout the course of the weekend, says Kühn.

Kühn adds that Randall Cable, SANRAL Western Region Manager, says that the Road Incident Management System (RIMS) has been activated and Provincial Traffic have been mobilised to assist with road safety and all emergency services.
