Freedom struggle stalwart laid to rest in NW─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 08:55 Sat, 06 Feb 2021
Anti-apartheid struggle activist and the wife of late South African Communist Party (SACP) secretary-general, Moses Kotane, will be laid to rest in the North West today.
Rebecca Kotane passed away at the age of 108 on Sunday, 31 January - just days before her 109th birthday.
Kotane took part in the historical 1956 women's march to the Union Buildings. She was then arrested at the march and spent two weeks in detention, sharing a cell with fellow freedom stalwarts Albertina Sisulu and Helen Joseph, amongst others.
Kotane has been officiated a state funeral. Amongst those expected to attend is North West Premier Job Mokgoro, members of the provincial executive and political heads of the ANC and alliance partners.
She is set to be buried in the North West village of Pella.
