Residents in Qwaqwa in the Free State are up in arms as they have not had any clean water for the past three weeks.

The water has been described to be filled with mud.

Some residents have indicated that they've suffered stomach aches as they can't afford to buy water for consumption.

Speaking to OFM News about this matter, Maluti A Phofung (MAP) Water’s spokesperson, Tebogo Kwakwa, says due to the recent heavy rains and floods, the Fika Patso dam became contaminated.

"As such, the water that was produced from the dam was of very poor quality and it overloaded the plant," says Kwakwa.

She adds that there's a high level of turbidity which was caused by a strong gushing waterfall from the mountains. It is unclear how long this will take place as the dam is overflowing at the moment.

Kwakwa says MAP Water would like to apologise to the residents for any inconvenience caused and is urging them to boil water before consumption.

She concludes that water trucks will be deployed to the affected areas to insure that residents get clean water.
