Mashinini called to action over crime, poor roads─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 15:23 Tue, 09 Feb 2021
Free State Police, Roads and Transport MEC Sam Mashinini vows to address issues raised by the Auditor-General against his department.
These include irregular and fruitless expenditures, as well as incomplete infrastructure projects, amongst other issues. Accounting before the Legislature's Portfolio Committee on Public Accounts and Finance, Mashinini confirmed more needs to be done to improve his department’s audit outcomes and performance. He vowed to implement consequence management measures against officers who fail to conduct their duties with due diligence as well as against contractors who fail to carry key projects to completion.
Mashinini’s commitment follows after heavy criticism from opposition parties over the state of roads in the province, increasing cases of crime, as well as alleged unprofessional conduct by police officers, particularly in the Thabo Mofutsanyana District.
The EFF’s Mahlomola Majake, together with other opposition members, has further called Mashinini to action over the poor state of roads and police bias, particularly those involved in rural safety. He highlighted that there is an increasing number of stock theft and racial indifference in rural areas with the police highly involved.
Mashinini has meanwhile acknowledged alleged cases of police bias and alleged involvement in stock theft cases, stating that investigations will unfold.
Criticism against the poor state of roads in the province comes a day after Mashinini sent his message of condolences to the families of seven children and the adult who drowned after their car was swept away due to flooding caused by heavy rain in Steynsrus.
He has committed to uphold accountability in his department and improve service delivery.
