NC court interpreter accused of asking bribes | News Article

The Northern Cape court interpreter who was nabbed by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks, on Tuesday morning, is being charged for asking bribes.

The 37-year-old Joseph Moroka is said to have demanded bribes from the families of suspects arrested for different matters between June 2016 and October 2017. The Hawks’ provincial spokesperson, Nomthandazo Mnisi, says Moroka is alleged to have asked for the gratification of R2500 from the sister of a suspect who was apprehended in a stock theft matter. He is also alleged to have demanded R1000 from the mother of another suspect who was nabbed in a drug-related matter. This as he promised to release the suspects once he got the said gratifications from these immediate family members.

Mnisi says Moroka appeared briefly at the Hartswater Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for alleged corruption and theft and he was released on R3000 bail.

He is set to again appear in court on Tuesday 16 March 2021.

Mnisi previously said Moroka was nabbed after the alleged matter was reported to the Hawks. He was apprehended at his workplace. He is facing charges relating to alleged corruption and theft.
