PSA concerned over state of school readiness in NC─── 11:21 Sun, 14 Feb 2021
The Public Service Association (PSA) has called the readiness of Northern Cape schools’ ahead of the re-opening tomorrow into question.
PSA spokesperson Reuben Maleka says that there is no commitment from the Department of Education to ensure the procurement of basic health and safety measures in schools.
Northern Cape Education spokesperson Lehuma, however, denies this.
He says the department will provide the necessary PPE to learners in Grade R, 1 and 8 as they are considered core groups.
Ntuane said, “…when we started last year we gave to everyone. They got two masks per learner. So we are saying because this is a continuation we will only give to those who do not have. So in terms of our readiness with regards to Covid-19 essentials we are ready.”
OFM News previously reported that Maleka maintains that conditions are not conducive for the opening of Northern Cape schools tomorrow. Furthermore, Maleka says the staff establishment at schools in view of the high vacancy rate is another major cause for concern.
In response to this Ntuane says that there is an influx of applications flowing in regularly which means that in the case of teachers being deemed unfit to work at school or from home measurements to appoint substitute teachers will be implemented.
Finally, schools in the Northern Cape are prepared for the opening in most aspects with meetings being held, at present, in preparations for opening on Monday, says Ntuane.
