NW ANC welcomes extension of intervention─── LUCKY NKUYANE 12:22 Tue, 16 Feb 2021
The ANC in the North West says it wants to see intensified service delivery and the stabilisation of the provincial government.
The ANC Inter-Provincial Committee (IPC) was reacting after the national government extended their control by another three months after the Section 100 Intervention into the administration of the province.
IPC coordinator, Hlomane Chauke, tells OFM News that they welcome the extension of the intervention by Cooperative Governance Minister, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, which seeks to repair the damage that was done. The province was placed under administration in 2018 following scenes of violence and alleged looting of state resources which erupted during the tenure of former premier Supra Mahumapelo. Chauke says they are happy that there are efforts to try and stabilise the province.
"We will engage with the national minister, maybe as a party, or we will be getting reports at the level of the intervention itself. We are dealing with a political situation, as the province, and [at] the level of the provincial government, I think we will definitely support all means to try and stabilise that government,” he adds.
A bulk of the province's municipalities and departments are under administration for failing to deliver proper and quality services to residents in the province. There has also been massive fraud and corruption reported in these institutions, including the Department of Health. Chauke says some departments in the province are still performing poorly.
On Monday 16 February 2021, the Ad Hoc Committee on the Section 100 Intervention in the North West Province said it was of the view that there are compelling reasons to extend the intervention in the province.
Chairperson of the committee, China Dodovu, says the committee agreed that the number of outstanding matters that have a direct bearing on the terms of reference of the intervention is enough grounds for the extension.
“The intervention should only leave the North West when those areas are satisfactorily addressed, especially for the benefit of the people of the province. What is important is that the extension of the intervention will be reviewed closer to the June 2021 deadline to ensure that all unresolved matters are dispensed off with,” Dodovu adds.
